In 2023, together we’re celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Endangered Species Act; legislation demonstrating our national commitment to conservation and the protection of imperiled plants, wildlife, and ecosystems. The immensely popular and bipartisan bill passed in December, 1973 by a vote of 92-0 in the Senate and 355-4 in the House. The Act remains a long-lasting example of commitment, cooperation, and the conservation triumphs that become possible when we work together.
With the understanding that cooperation results in powerful and significant impacts that benefit wildlife, plants, and people, we’ve launched a new project for youth grades K-12 – Collaborating for Wildlife and Plants: ESA at 50
We’re seeking creative works by groups of two or more K-12 youth on the theme of celebrating the success and value of the Endangered Species Act. This is a project designed to spark creativity and learning, and can involve many kinds of collaborative possibilities. For example, students from different grades can cooperate to create an image of local wildlife and plants, young people can collaborate to create a chalk mural showing native animals in their habitat, or youth in a classroom can create a shared mosaic artwork of a special native plant…. these are just a few of the possibilities.
Eligible artworks will be displayed in a virtual, online gallery that will be revealed on Endangered Species Day, May 19th, 2023.
